Underestimating your drink problem

posted on: March 6th, 2013
For many years, you might have been underestimating the damage your drinking habits are having on your wellbeing and life in general. Alcohol has long been a part of British culture and it can be hard to know when a line has been crossed.

However, it’s really important to try to assess your consumption of drink objectively. If you’re reaching for the bottle too often, it could be having a devastating impact on your health and living standards.

Luckily, help is at hand. If you decide that enough’s enough and now’s the time to take action to address your drinking, you can take advantage of alcohol rehab services. Admitting you have a problem is the first and often most difficult step. It takes courage, but the results of tackling an addition make this well worthwhile.

A national problem

You’re certainly not alone in overindulging in alcohol and it seems as though many people around the country are being dishonest when it comes to divulging what they consume. According to a study conducted by a team at University College London, the amount of alcohol drunk in England could be much higher than previously thought.

Researchers compared alcohol sales figures with surveys of what people said they drank and found a significant discrepancy. Almost half of the alcohol sold is unaccounted for in the figures given by drinkers.

Above the daily recommended limit

The results suggest that as many as three-quarters of people may be drinking above the recommended daily limit.

Those behind the study, which was published in the European Journal of Public Health, claimed that much alcohol use goes unreported because drinkers do not admit to how much they consume or keep track of the quantities of alcohol they get through.

Worrying stats

The research suggested that 19 per cent more men than previously thought were regularly exceeding their recommend daily limit, while 26 per cent more women were doing likewise.

In addition, total consumption across the week was higher than originally thought, with 15 per cent more men and 11 per cent more women drinking above weekly guidelines.

Large measures

Commenting on the findings, charity Alcohol Concern said: “Particularly when we drink at home, we pour much larger measures.”

It added: “When we’re totting up our drinks total we don’t always count some occasions as proper drinking. We may underestimate drink sizes and their alcoholic content, and not count holidays and special occasions like weddings, birthdays and Christmas when we often drink a great deal more than usual.”
